The Challenge
Tom Furcillo and Matt Allen from Fresh Features approached Studio Lab to produce a ESPN Best 2024 Sports Moments broadcast feature. The concept required SportsCenter hosts Gary Striewski and Randy Scott to travel across the country (and world!) to highlight the best sports moments of the year. How? An epic road trip in a vintage ‘74 VW Bus!
The Plan
Studio Lab’s Studio A is the largest LED Volume stage in New England, so the VW Bus could fit in easily. Studio Lab’s virtual production artists then sourced stock driving footage and a 360 rural scene to effectively show Gary and Randy drive across the country (and to France!). The end shot would have the LED Volume wall switch from a realistic driving scene to broadcast color bars and patterns revealing that the road trip was shot in a studio.
The Results
The project was met with enthusiasm from ESPN, with clients praising both the creative concept and flawless execution inside Studio Lab’s LED Volume. The collaboration delivered a broadcast feature that felt both cinematic and playful, elevating the year-end content into something truly memorable. The success of this production has strengthened the partnership between Fresh Features, ESPN, and Studio Lab — setting the stage for even more ambitious collaborations ahead.
