Gray Whale Gin

The Challenge The talented team at Colossus Creative concepted a series of videos that required 6 exterior locations along the California coast from Monterey to Malibu. All with perfect early afternoon light and weather, and the ability to change the perspective of the background to match a foreground bar and midground actors. Oh, and it needed to happen in one day! Impossible and incredibly expensive to shoot in one day on location. Just the kind of problem we love solving. The Plan Even with the best tech, you still have to move quickly to shoot 6 locations in one day. We set up two bar locations on set with the plan of shooting scene one at "bar 1" while prepping scene two at "bar 2", and using our pre-programmed KIRA cinema robot to move quickly scene to scene. To create realistic coastal environments, Ian and Wes Messina from partner company, Dimension 5, used a combination of stock footage for dynamic ocean media and 2.5D generative AI for the land mass components. The Results Six incredibly realistic coastal scenes on set. The only thing missing was the scent of saltwater and the squawking of seagulls! Oh, and very happy agency and Gray Whale clients, who wanted to move right into a second round of commercials. Not to mention some of our best exterior locations to date. Chauvet – LDI & NAB

The Challenge Create show-stopping booths for the LDI and NAB industry shows to help our clients bring in more business. The spaces needed to feel immersive, with beautiful virtual worlds, audio and lighting that fit the vibe of each event— theatrical for LDI, and cinematic for NAB. The Plan We designed a mesmerizing experience using live action, virtual production, audio, lighting, scenic, and cinema robotics. At LDI, the centerpiece was a live aerialist performing high above the crowd, combined with a silo of LED video panels that resembled a castle tower as they displayed stunning video content in concert with the live action. At NAB, we used the same video content and live performance, but instead of the silo, we used a full LED volume. The Results Hundreds of mesmerized attendees gathered around the booths for multiple performances every day. Carpet One

The Challenge Show two different rooms (Kitchen and Living Room) with different flooring. Then quickly and naturally travel between them in the final flooring ad spot for a seamless transition. The Plan Build practical sets in the foreground, including the real flooring. Then blend those with virtual environments on the LED Volume. The Results Less expensive and time consuming than building a full kitchen and living room, the blended physical and digital elements worked seamlessly and allowed production to have fine control over the environment. Year Up

The Challenge The concept called for an inner city student to break out of her limited opportunity reality to realize her personal educational goals and untapped career potential by engaging with Year Up United. The challenge was how to best communicate the student's journey visually in a 2:00 video with a 2 day shoot. The Plan Studio Lab partner, Greg Farnum, owner of Sweven Visual Engineering, and Virtual Production Artist, Blake Propst, Studio Engineer at Studio Lab used 3D XR, 2.5D Generative AI plates, Video Plates, CG, Green Screen, Compositing and a practical bedroom set with collapsing walls to reveal an idealized, Oz-like city skyline, conveying a journey from dark to light, with metaphors for optimism and personal growth. The Results An impactful, engaging video with positive messaging that encourages viewing through the end because of the beautiful “how did they do that” visuals. Bitfire

The Challenge At the very beginning of the Virtual Production era, we were hired to design and build the first-ever XR stage in Arizona, using Studio Lab's studios as the design inspiration. The Plan We designed two XR volumes. Studio A was a multi-purpose room with both a 70' x 16' curved video wall and a green screen on the opposite side of the room. Because the roof couldn't support the weight needed, we designed a new structure inside the building with a large weight capacity, transferring much of the load to the floor. The Studio B design had a full Virtual Production volume, including a LED floor and wraparound wall. The Results We installed Studio B as designed, including the volume and ARRI AMIRA Live cameras. In Studio A, we installed the rigging structure, drapery, lighting and grip. Nike

The Challenge We received a rush request to provide a video wall for a Nike Air Jordan commercial featuring star Celtics player, Jayson Tatum, which they needed to shoot off site at Red Sky Studios. We had just five days to plan the LED Wall configuration, while some of the creative concepts were still in development. Of course, we took the job! The Plan Hold a large amount of best-in-class AOTO RM2.3 LED panels, and line up our team to be ready for anything. The configuration for the wall and the wall content evolved several times in the prep stage, but we rolled with the changes and adjusted accordingly. The Results One happy client after a flawless production, despite a tight timeline and last minute changes. Fanatics

The Challenge Conductor Productions approached Studio Lab to help solve some problems they were having with the video wall they were using for their Fanatics sport apparel commercials. They were experiencing banding, drop outs, and other issues leading to overages. The Plan Studio Lab invited Conductor to test their cameras on our LED Volume stage with a variety of Fanatics video content displayed. After a successful test, our team of LED wall technicians set up our LED walls on location for their shoot at Charles River Studio in Canton, MA. The Results Our walls performed flawlessly, allowing the Director and DP to focus on actor performances and active visuals, and not on technical issues. They saw NONE of the issues they experienced with the inferior LED panels they had been using and were incredibly happy and relieved that they had found a solution. Dropkick Murphys

The Challenge The Dropkick Murphys band and production team were doing tour prep and rehearsals in Studio A when the COVID 19 pandemic shut everything down. With their tour cancelled, they asked us if we could livestream their St. Patrick's Day concert in our studio. The catch? It was in less than two days. And we had never done an in-studio production of this size and scale under such a short timeline. The Plan With a crew of nearly 40 people who were eager and excited for a challenge like this, we setup our video wall, stage, jib crane, audio, video, lighting, and live switching in Studio A. The Results A rockin' concert that, at the time, was the most viewed livestream concert in history, with 40+ Million views across multiple platforms. UKG

The Challenge Produce a compelling “Town Hall” type presentation with five UKG corporate officers to communicate new product launches and exciting corporate initiatives to global UKG employees. The visuals involved had to be dynamic, intuitive and engaging to hold the employees interest. The Plan Merge the unique capabilities of Event United’s live event mastery and Studio Lab’s visual wizardry to stage a three camera live switch production with animated graphics and videos to be displayed on the 65’ x 15’ 8K video wall at Studio Lab. To account for the global audience in various time zones, the presentation was designed to feel like a live event, but was pre-recorded. Then, it was edited in Studio Lab’s DaVinci edit suite before finally being published to UKG’s website for global employee viewing. The Results A truly collaborative effort by Events United, Studio Lab, and UKG’s in-house creative team. The town hall video was informative, entertaining, and visually dynamic. It commanded attention and fostered many views by the global UKG audience. Partners Have a Vision? Contact Us! Follow Us

Top 3 Tech Company

Top 3 Tech Company The Challenge Our integrations team was brought in by a Top 3 Tech Company to assist with their virtual production workflows. However, the project’s scope quickly evolved when the client decided to relocate their LED volume to a new site and repurpose the space. The challenge was that the new location needed to function not as a virtual production studio, but instead as a multi-use space. This meant designing a system that was user-friendly enough to be operated by anyone, regardless of technical expertise. The Plan We oversaw the entire relocation process of the LED volume and meticulously redesigned the system, focusing on user experience. Our team turned complex workflows into intuitive operations, ensuring that the technology could be easily managed by users with little to no technical background. The Results Creating a versatile, user-friendly environment that not only enhanced the client’s virtual production capabilities but also expanded the functionality of their space, making it a valuable asset for a variety of uses.
