PS260

The Challenge Shoot 11 actors in front of 11 unique interior and exterior locations in 2 days, with precise camera framing to facilitate a split screen of half of two actors' faces speaking lines in sync. With a modest budget and compressed schedule. Easy, right!? The Plan Scouting, permitting and dressing 11 locations would be cost and time prohibitive. So, Studio Lab and PS260 sourced a combination of stock photography and stock video for the exterior and interior locations, introduced practical foreground props for added realism, and matched the light quality of the stock photo and video plates with DMX-controlled LED instruments. Plus, we used our KIRA motion control robot for precision framing of the actors faces to facilitate the desired split screen effect. The Results PS260 and Studio Lab collaborated seamlessly to plan and execute two very efficient shoot days in the LED Volume. 5 locations on day one and 6 on day two. The resultant spot looks amazing, with incredibly realistic locations and engaging performances from the actors. Happy production company. Happy client. Impactful and engaging television spot! Maine Lottery

The Challenge Bright Matter Productions came to us with a unique challenge: create a 30-second commercial for the Maine Lottery featuring four different decades—'70s, '80s, '90s, and 2000s—each represented by the same living room set, but dressed to fit each era. And, of course, they needed it all done within three weeks on a modest budget. Naturally, we're all in! The Plan To nail the look of four distinct eras using XR technology with full tracking and parallax, we divided the workload between our team and a trusted external partner. We managed agency and client reviews with precision, quickly sending approved virtual sets to the Art Department, who sourced the perfect period-specific furnishings to complement the virtual backgrounds. The Results Because the shoot was captured in camera with no green screen and compositing required, and with match cuts facilitated with our KIRA motion control cinema robot, Bright Matter Productions was able to move right into post-production without getting bogged down with rotoscoping and green screen compositing. The whole project, from concept to air date, was wrapped up in just four weeks—saving time, money, and delivering an amazing spot that the agency and client absolutely love! Velcro

The Challenge Shoot an ad promoting a Velcro product, demonstrating it’s uses in multiple public and private gathering spaces…during COVID. The Plan Utilize LED Virtual Production and the Volume to build the needed environments in 3D. Shoot talent and product in front of their respective environments. The Results A full spot was shot in a single day with minimal crew and talent, all while maintaining COVID protocols which were in place at the time. Production was able to shoot in a basketball court, a hospital room, construction site, and school room, all of which would have been difficult or impossible to shoot practically due to health restrictions in place. Rings & Realms

The Challenge Create a weekly web series with exceptional production quality to analyze Prime Video’s The Rings of Power series. The Plan Use the LED Volume to create visual interest and “move” the talent to as many locations from The Rings of Power as possible. Red Sox

The Challenge Create epic promotional content of all Boston Red Sox players quickly and efficiently at their spring training facility. Specifically, capture a variety of high-energy shots, poses, and backgrounds while keeping the shoot time to just 5-10 minutes per player. The Plan The Studio Lab crew traveled down to JetBlue Park in Florida with our video wall, Motorized Precision cinema robot, RED digital cinema cameras, Disguise servers, automated lighting, scenic, and rigging to aid the Red Sox creative team in creating unique promotional content. Everything was set up and operational by the end of the first setup day, including the full LED Volume stage and an additional infinity wall photo booth that was designed and built in house. The Results A seamless, high-quality production that delivered stunning, high-energy visuals, showcasing the Red Sox players looking their best on the Jumbotron and social media. We captured enough dynamic footage to cover the entire season while meeting the exacting standards of this iconic team, with much thanks to the level of excellence and efficiency of the Red Sox creative team. Godsmack

The Challenge To create a powerful music video with visuals that support the energy and lyrics of the song, including in-studio pyrotechnic and a character crossing worlds. The Plan To pre-record the character as if in one world, then use the LED volume to display the footage as if she is stuck in the screen while the band is playing. Then, to break free only to be locked back inside at the end. The Results Conceptualized and Directed by Godsmack’s own Sully Erna, the final music video is a true rock & roll creation. High energy, quick cuts, clear visuals, and a killer performance by the artist all come together to tell a story that reinforce the lyrics and showcase the emotion of the song. Signum Studios

The Challenge To shoot a proof of concept video with talent in a post-apocalyptic city for Signum University’s studio arm, Signum Studios. The Plan Bring in real foreground elements, including a full floor, to blend the real world with the digital, allowing for freedom of camera movement and wider shots to more fully show the scale of the environment. The Results A seamless blend of real and digital elements that keeps the focus on the talent while immersing them (and the viewer) into a wider world; enhancing, without being distracting. Hannaford

The Challenge To shoot an entire year of seasonal ad spots all at once. The Plan To use virtual production to build 3D worlds for each season and integrate that with practical foreground elements that can be easily swapped out. Pre-program the lighting for each season so that switching from scene to scene only takes a moment. The Results Footage was able to be captured for 5 spots across 4 seasons— an entire years worth of content, with only 1 pre-light day and 1 shoot day. Hood

The Challenge To create a visually exciting ad spot in a single shot, showcasing use of multiple product designs in a bright and warm environment despite it being the dead of winter. The Plan To use the cinema robot to capture and repeat a dynamic move. Different products could then be used on different camera passes and the final take composited together from the different passes. A virtual kitchen background using Unreal Engine would supply the needed warmth to the room. The Results The rough cut was finished on the shoot day over lunch. 603 Brewery

The Challenge To shoot a compelling ad spot for a seasonal product release utilizing narrative elements and incorporating existing product imagery. The Plan To build on the product's visual design and create a physical environment reminiscent of the setting on the label. Use practical foreground elements to set the scene and a virtual background along with haze and dramatic lighting to set the mood. All these elements support a brief and somewhat surreal narrative which ultimately highlights the product. The Results A single day for build and pre-light and a single shoot day allowed the team plenty of time to be creative. The real foreground and virtual background sell the scene while still maintaining all the benefits of a controlled studio.
