ESPN Year End

The Challenge Tom Furcillo and Matt Allen from Fresh Features approached Studio Lab to produce a ESPN Best 2024 Sports Moments broadcast feature. The concept required SportsCenter hosts Gary Striewski and Randy Scott to travel across the country (and world!) to highlight the best sports moments of the year. How? An epic road trip in a vintage ‘74 VW Bus! The Plan Studio Lab’s Studio A is the largest LED Volume stage in New England, so the VW Bus could fit in easily. Studio Lab’s virtual production artists then sourced stock driving footage and a 360 rural scene to effectively show Gary and Randy drive across the country (and to France!). The end shot would have the LED Volume wall switch from a realistic driving scene to broadcast color bars and patterns revealing that the road trip was shot in a studio. The Results The project was met with enthusiasm from ESPN, with clients praising both the creative concept and flawless execution inside Studio Lab’s LED Volume. The collaboration delivered a broadcast feature that felt both cinematic and playful, elevating the year-end content into something truly memorable. The success of this production has strengthened the partnership between Fresh Features, ESPN, and Studio Lab — setting the stage for even more ambitious collaborations ahead. Stonyfield

The Challenge The in-house agency at Stonyfield / Siggis Yogurt, “The Ferm”, concepted a series of digital videos that highlighted the lack of artificial ingredients in their squeezable, lunchable Stonyfield Yogurt Packs. The theme being that the product was now lighter and healthier. The Plan Could Studio Lab via Production Partner Sweven FX reinforce the “Light and Healthy” message by having the product float through interior and exterior environments? Of course! Director Greg Farnum and his amazing team made a flying rig on the compact EVO motion control arm, and used the KIRA cinema robot to track the product as it flew from virtual kitchen, to farm, and school cafeteria. The Results The final videos are fun, unique and demand repeat viewing. Just what an innovative, forward thinking brand like Stonyfield Yogurt needs to stand apart from their competition. Sweet Baby Ray’s

The Challenge Windy Films and the GYK Agency concepted an ambitious series of digital videos featuring Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce and Ken’s Salad Dressing. The assignment would require tabletop food content, exterior lifestyle video, and photography, and outdoor grilled meat shots. 8 videos, 2 products, in 2 days. The Plan Studio Lab proved to be an excellent resource for this production. The tabletop food footage was shot in Studio A, utilizing the LED Volume wall to display logo color plates for Sweet Baby Ray’s and a photoreal XR Kitchen for Ken’s. The KIRA Cinema Robot was used for principal photography. Also, the new, portable EVO robot with claw attachment was used to apply sauce to grilled meats and to pour the sauce and dressing consistently and accurately. Meanwhile, a second unit was outside in our “Fire N’ Gin” space, shooting lifestyle photography and grilled meat footage. Just around the corner, Studio B was used for food prep and set storage — making for an efficient shoot. The Results Videos that are gorgeous and stomach growling-worthy! The videos are performing beyond expectations, and GYK and Windy Films are thrilled and inspired by the creative tools that Studio Lab offers. Culture Pop

The Challenge The Fair Folk agency needed to produce two broadcast spots for their new client, Culture Pop. The approved concepts called for two unique locations: a suburban neighborhood and a city park. Each set relies on oversaturated colors and a bright sunny day. The agency felt strongly that the spots should be produced using virtual production at Studio Lab to achieve the stylized look they desired. Shooting in our volume will guarantee perfect weather all day and a quick change from the neighborhood to park locations The Plan Agency Producer and Creative Director, Dave Shaw, wanted to direct the spots, so we partnered Dave with Sweven Visual Engineering for production support. Sweven sourced the crew and art department, allowing Dave and his creative team to focus on casting and client management. The Set Designer, Garrett Gage, built an amazing eight foot tall fruit tree that was propped with Culture Pop soda. When the practical set pieces were blended with the virtual location, the results were amazing! The Results The one day shoot was a model of efficiency and collaboration. We shot two unique commercials in 10 hours! The agency was very happy, and the clients were beyond thrilled! The Culture Pop clients loved the set so much, they asked for the Soda Stand and Fruit Tree props to be delivered and displayed in their lobby. The Culture Pop product launch has been very successful with awareness and sales increasing as a result. THE FINISHED PRODUCTS BEHIND THE SCENES Partners +9 Want to Collaborate? Red Sox – 2025

The Challenge After a successful shoot in 2024, the Boston Red Sox invited us back to do it all again for the 2025 season. The goal was the same: capture eye-catching, high-energy footage of every player in just 5–10 minutes each, while maintaining production value worthy of Fenway’s Jumbotron and national broadcast spots. Ambitious? You betcha. The Plan Building on the momentum of last year, the Studio Lab crew traveled down to the Red Sox spring training facility in Florida with our full mobile virtual production setup: RED cinema cameras, Motorized Precision cinema robot, Disguise servers, AOTO LED wall, lighting, and other production gear. We handled all the tech, timing, and logistics for this shoot so the Red Sox creative team could focus on directing talent and pushing the creative envelope with their content. The Results Capturing a full season’s worth of awesome visuals in just a couple days - and having a blast doing it. Working with the Red Sox creative team feels like a dream. They're ambitious. Great communicators. Total pros. This was our second year working together, and once again, we were blown away by their vision and efficiency. These folks are not only some of the most creative, talented professionals we've ever worked with, they're also so kind, collaborative, and just fun to be around. This shoot was smooth, efficient, and full of energy from start to finish. We wrapped it up with that rare feeling you get when you know you were part of something special. “Working with the Red Sox creative team is like working with a close friend on a huge wild idea, having a blast doing it, and then sharing your work with the world... kinda like the dreams you had as a kid.” - Tim Messina, CEO, Studio Lab Partners Crew Production Manager - Tim Messina Senior Video Engineer - Jon Martell DP / Robot Operator - Blake Propst Video / Playback Operator - Felipe Bida Lighting Designer - Mike Salvino And the amazing Red Sox Creative Team!   *Video wall content provided by Red Sox and NESN. The Plan Studio Lab provided the ideal space to create cinematic visuals with our LED Volume, cinema robot, and virtual production capabilities. The Results Great visuals that helped Boston Dynamics make a major impact at the summit. Gray Whale Gin

The Challenge The talented team at Colossus Creative concepted a series of videos that required 6 exterior locations along the California coast from Monterey to Malibu. All with perfect early afternoon light and weather, and the ability to change the perspective of the background to match a foreground bar and midground actors. Oh, and it needed to happen in one day! Impossible and incredibly expensive to shoot in one day on location. Just the kind of problem we love solving. The Plan Even with the best tech, you still have to move quickly to shoot 6 locations in one day. We set up two bar locations on set with the plan of shooting scene one at "bar 1" while prepping scene two at "bar 2", and using our pre-programmed KIRA cinema robot to move quickly scene to scene. To create realistic coastal environments, Ian and Wes Messina from partner company, Dimension 5, used a combination of stock footage for dynamic ocean media and 2.5D generative AI for the land mass components. The Results Six incredibly realistic coastal scenes on set. The only thing missing was the scent of saltwater and the squawking of seagulls! Oh, and very happy agency and Gray Whale clients, who wanted to move right into a second round of commercials. Not to mention some of our best exterior locations to date. Chauvet – LDI & NAB

The Challenge Create show-stopping booths for the LDI and NAB industry shows to help our clients bring in more business. The spaces needed to feel immersive, with beautiful virtual worlds, audio and lighting that fit the vibe of each event— theatrical for LDI, and cinematic for NAB. The Plan We designed a mesmerizing experience using live action, virtual production, audio, lighting, scenic, and cinema robotics. At LDI, the centerpiece was a live aerialist performing high above the crowd, combined with a silo of LED video panels that resembled a castle tower as they displayed stunning video content in concert with the live action. At NAB, we used the same video content and live performance, but instead of the silo, we used a full LED volume. The Results Hundreds of mesmerized attendees gathered around the booths for multiple performances every day. Carpet One

The Challenge Show two different rooms (Kitchen and Living Room) with different flooring. Then quickly and naturally travel between them in the final flooring ad spot for a seamless transition. The Plan Build practical sets in the foreground, including the real flooring. Then blend those with virtual environments on the LED Volume. The Results Less expensive and time consuming than building a full kitchen and living room, the blended physical and digital elements worked seamlessly and allowed production to have fine control over the environment. Year Up

The Challenge The concept called for an inner city student to break out of her limited opportunity reality to realize her personal educational goals and untapped career potential by engaging with Year Up United. The challenge was how to best communicate the student's journey visually in a 2:00 video with a 2 day shoot. The Plan Studio Lab partner, Greg Farnum, owner of Sweven Visual Engineering, and Virtual Production Artist, Blake Propst, Studio Engineer at Studio Lab used 3D XR, 2.5D Generative AI plates, Video Plates, CG, Green Screen, Compositing and a practical bedroom set with collapsing walls to reveal an idealized, Oz-like city skyline, conveying a journey from dark to light, with metaphors for optimism and personal growth. The Results An impactful, engaging video with positive messaging that encourages viewing through the end because of the beautiful “how did they do that” visuals. Bitfire

The Challenge At the very beginning of the Virtual Production era, we were hired to design and build the first-ever XR stage in Arizona, using Studio Lab's studios as the design inspiration. The Plan We designed two XR volumes. Studio A was a multi-purpose room with both a 70' x 16' curved video wall and a green screen on the opposite side of the room. Because the roof couldn't support the weight needed, we designed a new structure inside the building with a large weight capacity, transferring much of the load to the floor. The Studio B design had a full Virtual Production volume, including a LED floor and wraparound wall. The Results We installed Studio B as designed, including the volume and ARRI AMIRA Live cameras. In Studio A, we installed the rigging structure, drapery, lighting and grip. Nike

The Challenge We received a rush request to provide a video wall for a Nike Air Jordan commercial featuring star Celtics player, Jayson Tatum, which they needed to shoot off site at Red Sky Studios. We had just five days to plan the LED Wall configuration, while some of the creative concepts were still in development. Of course, we took the job! The Plan Hold a large amount of best-in-class AOTO RM2.3 LED panels, and line up our team to be ready for anything. The configuration for the wall and the wall content evolved several times in the prep stage, but we rolled with the changes and adjusted accordingly.
