The Challenge To shoot a proof of concept video with talent in a post-apocalyptic city for Signum University’s studio arm, Signum Studios. The Plan Bring in real foreground elements, including a full floor, to blend the real world with the digital, allowing for freedom of camera movement and wider shots to more fully show the scale of the environment. The Results A seamless blend of real and digital elements that keeps the focus on the talent while immersing them (and the viewer) into a wider world; enhancing, without being distracting. The Challenge To shoot an entire year of seasonal ad spots all at once. The Plan To use virtual production to build 3D worlds for each season and integrate that with practical foreground elements that can be easily swapped out. Pre-program the lighting for each season so that switching from scene to scene only takes a moment. The Results Footage was able to be captured for 5 spots across 4 seasons— an entire years worth of content, with only 1 pre-light day and 1 shoot day. The Challenge To create a visually exciting ad spot in a single shot, showcasing use of multiple product designs in a bright and warm environment despite it being the dead of winter. The Plan To use the cinema robot to capture and repeat a dynamic move. Different products could then be used on different camera passes and the final take composited together from the different passes. A virtual kitchen background using Unreal Engine would supply the needed warmth to the room. The Results The rough cut was finished on the shoot day over lunch. The Challenge To shoot a compelling ad spot for a seasonal product release utilizing narrative elements and incorporating existing product imagery. The Plan To build on the product's visual design and create a physical environment reminiscent of the setting on the label. Use practical foreground elements to set the scene and a virtual background along with haze and dramatic lighting to set the mood. All these elements support a brief and somewhat surreal narrative which ultimately highlights the product. The Results A single day for build and pre-light and a single shoot day allowed the team plenty of time to be creative. The real foreground and virtual background sell the scene while still maintaining all the benefits of a controlled studio.
